Asia Land Forum 2012
2 to 3 October 2012
Imperial Garden Villa and Hotel, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Democratizing Governance on Land
Enhanced Access of the Poor to Land and Common Property Resources
Next week, the Asia Land Forum will take place from October 2-3, 2012 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. With the theme “Democratizing Governance on Land towards Enhanced Access of the Poor to Land and Common Property Resources”, the forum will bring together civil society leaders, government officials, academia, and experts from Asia to define the way forward to achieving good land governance.
Asia is home to 75% of the world’s farming households, 80 percent of which are small-scale farmers, who are increasingly facing threats to their way of life resulting from unchecked large-scale investments in land, in particular for agriculture, biofuels and mining. In response, this event will shine a light on the growing concerns of Asian rural poor communities and define democratic land governance policies that take into account the rights of farmers, and especially the rights of women.
Taking a deeper look at the impact of the 1975-1979 Khmer Rouge regime, which put all of Cambodia’s land under state ownership and destroyed all records, participants will consider ways to stem the tide of land dispossession and make progress in creating a legal framework in Cambodia.
